I found out I was pregnant with twins during my first year of residency, which was a big surprise! As we prepared (if you actually can) for what this meant, we found out one of our girls had bilaterally clubfeet and would eventually require a minor procedure for this.
I was very nervous about this, yet when our daughter had her procedure in the OR and required an anesthetic, we had wonderful care and the anesthesiologist at our paediatric hospital made the experience so comforting and easy. She demonstrated the skills I hope to develop over the course of my training and beyond. She was compassionate and kind, and made two worried parents feel at ease.
It’s an interesting position to be in, to go from provider to patient, and this experience will certainly have a positive impact in my ability to relate to patients going forward.
